Fort William sits at the foot of Ben Nevis in a damp basin that holds still air longer than surrounding areas. The woodland paths along the loch shore and the Glen Nevis approach are the first places to notice activity.
The town centre itself is usually breezier and less affected — midge trouble here tends to be on the outskirts, not the high street.

Fort William occupies a damp basin at the head of Loch Linnhe, backed by Ben Nevis and flanked by Glen Nevis to the east.
The geography traps still air: the surrounding mountains block the prevailing wind, and the confluence of the River Nevis and Lochy creates a wide, damp floodplain that holds humidity late into the evening.
Warm spells in mid-May can produce the first significant midge activity here while the Cairngorms remain quiet — the season arrives earlier than the national pattern by a clear two weeks.
The Glen Nevis car park is the most documented midge hotspot in Lochaber, and for good reason: the glen floor is sheltered, the Water of Nevis provides constant moisture, and the gradient of the path means walkers stop and regroup in the same spots every time.
The lochside path from the town centre toward Caol is another concentration zone, particularly on still evenings when the water surface is flat.
Where the forecast matters here is in the fine grain: a moderate index for Fort William can feel very different between the high street (breezy, fine) and the Glen Nevis approach (sheltered, thick).
The practical rule is to keep the high street and waterfront for evening plans, and treat any low-ground Glen Nevis activity after 5pm with respect.
The Ben Nevis summit area is too high and exposed to matter — the problem is getting back down to the car park.
The Corporation car park at the Glen Nevis base is the specific location where walkers consistently report being caught: they descend from a breezy summit feeling triumphant and stand around in the still, damp air of the glen floor repacking gear while the cloud reforms.
The Caledonian Canal towpath toward Banavie is another corridor where the loch breeze drops and the sheltered canal margin takes over.
