Arisaig sits on the Ardnamurchan coast where the mainland meets the sea lochs, and its midge behaviour is governed by a fine balance between coastal exposure and inland shelter.
The white sand beaches and the campsite at the road end are the main visitor focus points, and both sit in the transition zone between sea breeze and damp grassland.
The machair — the dune grassland that backs the beaches — holds moisture long after the tide has dropped, creating a humid microclimate at ground level that midges exploit as the evening wind eases.
Arisaig's coastal position truncates the season compared with inland west coast: activity peaks in the June–July window and drops noticeably in August as the sea breeze regime strengthens.
The campsite at the road end of the B8008 is where visitors consistently report the worst conditions — it sits on low-lying ground between the beach and damp grassland, and the shelter provided by the surrounding trees traps evening air.
The ferry queue for the Small Isles at the Arisaig jetty is another documented trap: passengers wait in still air at the water's edge while a breeze is visible ten metres offshore.
Practical advice: Arisaig is a midday and early-afternoon destination.
The beaches themselves are breezier than the car park and campsite, so use the sand rather than the grass edge for longer stops.
If camping, the higher ground on the inland side of the B8008 gives better airflow than the sheltered pitches near the beach.
