Mull's midge geography is shaped by the island's exposed western coast versus its sheltered eastern glens, and Craignure sits right on the boundary.
The ferry terminal catches sea breeze across the Sound of Mull on most days, so disembarking passengers often arrive with an inaccurate impression of island conditions.
As soon as the road turns inland — the A849 toward Salen, or the minor roads into the Glen More forest — the wind drops and the damp woodland air takes over.
The terrain on the eastern side of Mull is thick with birch and oak woodland, damp glens, and slow-moving burns, all set in a landscape of low, sheltering hills that block the prevailing westerly.
Mull's season diverges from the mainland: the island warms more slowly in spring, so activity typically starts in mid-June rather than late May, but mild autumns can extend it into October in sheltered eastern glens.
The Salen campsite and the loch shore at Loch na Keal are the most frequently reported hotspots — both are sheltered by woodland and hold damp air into the evening.
The ferry queue at Craignure on a still morning is a minor trap: passengers wait in vehicle queues at the water's edge where the breeze has not yet established.

The western side — Calgary Bay, the Treshnish coast, the road to Fionnphort — is consistently breezier than the wooded eastern glens.
