Inveraray occupies a sheltered position on the western shore of Loch Fyne, where the loch narrows and the surrounding hills — Dùn na Cuaiche, Beinn Bhrèac — create a natural windbreak.
The town is famous for its Georgian architecture and its castle, but the geography that makes it picturesque also makes it midge-favourable: damp woodland, multiple burns, a loch shore that holds still air, and extensive forestry plantations that block the wind at ground level.
Inveraray's timing matches the Argyll coast pattern: activity starts in late May, peaks in July, and can persist into September when the loch's thermal mass delays autumn cooling.
Inveraray Castle grounds and the lochside path from the town toward the castle are the main visitor concentration points, and both sit in the shelter zone where the surrounding trees block the prevailing wind.
The forestry commission car park at the start of the Dùn na Cuaiche path is a secondary trap: visitors park in a forest clearing that holds still air while the viewpoint at the top of the hill is exposed and clear.
The town's main street and the pier area are generally breezier and less problematic — the buildings funnel the loch breeze and create enough airflow to reduce activity.
Practical advice: Inveraray's main street and the pier are safe for evening plans.
The castle grounds and the lochside footpaths are fine during the day but need timing at dusk.
If you are walking the hills above the town, the path up Dùn na Cuaiche climbs quickly into exposed ground — the problem is the sheltered start point, not the summit.
