Dunoon faces the Clyde and catches coastal air, but the Cowal peninsula behind it is thick with forestry, damp glens and sheltered lochans. The town waterfront is fine; the wooded areas toward the Ardgartan and Loch Eck side are where midges gather.

The ferry crossing from Gourock is usually the breeziest part of the trip.
