Air Vice-Marshal Grieve reports the conditions below against his will.

Loch Lomond — Balloch

The south loch shore can feel harmless by day and suddenly busy around damp evening water edges. Season: June–August.

IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Air Vice-Marshal GrieveField Assessment

Command wishes it noted that probing attacks are underway across the glen. The enemy believes a single application of Smidge constitutes a defensive position. They do not understand what they have invited. Noted.

Know this place

The southern end of Loch Lomond is popular and accessible, but the sheltered bays and wooded islands concentrate midges on still evenings. The West Highland Way path along the lochside is a known hotspot after 6pm.

The loch's size creates local microclimates — if the water is flat calm, midge risk is higher than the breeze on your face might suggest.

“The sector reports excellent feeding conditions at dusk. Morale among the squadrons is regrettably high.”

The full picture
Loch Lomond's southern basin is one of Scotland's most-visited outdoor spaces, and its midge behaviour is less aggressive than the west coast proper but more persistent than its southern latitude would suggest. The loch's size — 23 miles long, up to 5 miles wide — creates its own weather. Flat water in the Balloch and Luss bays is a reliable indicator of midge activity, and the wind that feels present at the visitor centre car park may not reach the lochshore path fifty metres away. The oak and birch woodlands along the eastern shore hold damp air efficiently, and the many small burns that feed the loch create a dense network of breeding sites. Seasonal timing here does not mirror the west coast: Loch Lomond's lower altitude and southerly position push activity to begin earlier (mid-May in warm springs) but also to peak sooner, with July often more manageable than the west Highland glens. The West Highland Way stretch between Balmaha and Rowardennan is the consistent trap: walkers making good time along the exposed road section drop down into wooded lochside path and find themselves in a different atmospheric world. Practical advice: the Balloch waterfront and the visitor centre area are generally fine throughout the day. The risk concentrates on the wooded lochshore paths in the two hours before sunset. If you are camping on the eastern shore, pitch where you can feel the breeze off the water, not in the sheltered hollows behind the treeline.
