Cairngorms — Aviemore
Midge risk in Cairngorms — Aviemore right now: Low (3/10). Peak tonight: 11:00pm.
Aviemore is often easier in breeze and open ground, but forest edges and lochans still need respect. Season: June–August.
Low risk right now. A pleasant time to be out and about.
Intelligence confirms the airborne divisions have been stood down. Personnel have withdrawn to the pools — not, it must be stressed, defeated. They are regrouping. For now, this is low risk, which command concedes only under duress is a good thing. The public is advised to enjoy the reprieve. It will not last. A form has been filed to note the inconvenience.
Aviemore benefits from more open ground than the west coast, but the surrounding pine forests and small lochans trap damp air and create localised midge pockets even on breezy days.
The Cairngorm plateau itself is too exposed and cool — midges here are a lowland and treeline problem, not a summit one.

Aviemore occupies an intermediate position in the midge geography of Scotland — meaningfully easier than the west coast, but not immune.
The surrounding terrain is a mixture of open moorland, Caledonian pine forest, and scattered lochans, and each habitat behaves differently.
The Rothiemurchus forest floor, with its deep pine needle carpet, damp hollows, and slow-moving burns, produces localised midge pockets that can surprise visitors who have checked a favourable regional forecast.
Loch Morlich and Loch an Eilein are the classic trap zones: beautiful, popular, and sheltered by trees that block the prevailing wind.
A compressed season is the Cairngorm signature: altitude pushes spring arrival later, so midge activity starts in early June rather than May, runs consistently through August, and drops sharply in September as the nights cool quickly.
The car park at the Cairngorm Mountain ski centre is a notable exception to the altitude rule: at 650 metres it should be too exposed, but the sheltered parking bay at the base of the funicular can hold still air on overcast days.
Practical advice: Aviemore town and the Speyside Way open sections are low-risk.
The forest trails around Rothiemurchus, Glenmore, and the loch shores need timing — late morning to early afternoon is the safe window.
Above 600 metres on the plateau, midges are not a factor.
The transition zone between treeline and open moor is where most visitors get caught out, not on the summits.
