Air Vice-Marshal GrieveField Assessment

Intelligence confirms the airborne divisions have been stood down. Personnel have withdrawn to the pools — not, it must be stressed, defeated. They are regrouping. For now, this is low risk, which command concedes only under duress is a good thing. The public is advised to enjoy the reprieve. It will not last. A form has been filed to note the inconvenience.

Know this glen

Glen Affric is one of Scotland's most beautiful glens and one of the best midge habitats: ancient pinewoods, lochans, boggy ground, and almost complete shelter from wind. It is spectacular and can be unbearable on still days.

The forestry paths and the loch shore are the worst. Higher up the glen toward Affric Lodge is slightly more open but the midges follow the water.

“The glen reports excellent feeding conditions at dusk. Morale among the squadrons is regrettably high.”

The full picture
Glen Affric is arguably the single most productive midge habitat on the BiteForecast network. The combination of ancient Caledonian pine forest, multiple lochans, extensive boggy ground, and near-total shelter from the prevailing wind creates conditions that the Highland biting midge exploits to its full potential. The glen runs east-west and the surrounding hills — Mam Sodhail, Carn Eige, and the Affric hills — block wind from every direction. On days when a moderate breeze is recorded at the nearest weather station, the glen floor can be completely still. For calendar timing, Glen Affric tracks the west coast pattern, but the intensity is higher and the windows of relief are narrower than anywhere else on this list. The Dog Falls car park and the path network around Loch Affric and Loch Beinn a'Mheadhoin are the documented concentration zones: the combination of visitor traffic, damp ground, and tree shelter creates conditions that hold midge activity through the middle of the day on overcast days, not just at dawn and dusk. The forestry paths that lead off the main track are particularly active — the canopy traps humidity and the drainage ditches provide breeding sites. Practical advice: Glen Affric is a morning-only destination in season. Arrive by 9am, hike the higher trails that climb above the treeline, and be off the glen floor by early afternoon. The higher ground toward the Affric Lodge end of the glen is slightly more exposed but the improvement is marginal. If the regional forecast shows still, overcast conditions for the area, treat Glen Affric as active all day.
