Torridon

Torridon's dramatic landscape is also a textbook midge habitat: damp glen floors, loch edges, and shelter from the prevailing wind. The lower ground around the Torridon Inn and the loch shore are the busiest areas.
The mountain paths climb quickly into wind and cooler air — if you're heading up Beinn Eighe or Liathach, the midge problem ends at about 300 metres.

Torridon is one of the most geographically consistent midge locations in Scotland — the landscape that makes it spectacular is the same landscape that makes it productive.
The glen floors are damp, the loch edges are sheltered by surrounding sandstone peaks, and the prevailing south-westerly wind that clears other locations is blocked by the mass of Beinn Alligin, Liathach, and Beinn Eighe.
The result is a valley system that holds still air on its lower ground for extended periods.
The Torridon Inn and the loch shore at the head of Upper Loch Torridon are the main visitor concentration points, and both sit in the shelter zone.
One distinction in Torridon: while the season follows the west coast pattern, the evening peak is compressed.
The mountains cast long shadows and the glen floor loses direct sun early, shifting the midge window earlier by an hour or more compared with open locations.
The Bealach na Gaoithe — the high pass between Torridon and Kishorn — is a known deception: the pass itself is windy and clear, but the descent into the Torridon valley drops into still, damp air abruptly.
The car park at the start of the Liathach path is the most frequently reported trap: walkers prepare and return in ground-level conditions that can be very different from the ridge experience.
Practical advice: morning starts are the only reliable window for low-ground activity in Torridon.
By 3pm the glen floor is already shading and the air is stilling.
If you are using the Torridon Inn or the campsite, the evening hours need planning — the loch shore is not the place for a sunset drink when the index is elevated.
