Isle of Skye — Portree

Portree is breezy when exposed, but sheltered gardens, burns and campsite corners can still bite. Season: June–August.

Portree harbour is often breezy enough to keep the cloud out, but the wooded glens just outside town — particularly toward the Storr and the Braes — trap damp air and midges efficiently.

Campers on Skye should check forecasts for the specific campsite, not the town; a five-minute drive inland can mean a very different evening.

Skye's midge reputation is earned honestly, but Portree itself is a case study in local variation.

The harbour sits exposed to the Raasay Sound breeze, and the town's waterfront can feel completely unaffected while the wooded glens a mile inland are active.

The terrain behind Portree — damp, sheltered, thick with bracken and birch — holds standing water in the burns and ditches year-round.

The A87 corridor toward the Storr and the Braes is the classic trap: visitors drive from the breezy harbour into sheltered valley sections and step out into air that has not moved in hours.

On timing: Skye produces activity in sheltered eastern glens through September, weeks after the Cuillin ridges have become too exposed to host anything.

The Fairy Pools car park is the most notorious single location on the island — a damp, sheltered glen floor that funnels tourists directly into prime midge habitat at the worst time of day.

The Sligachan campsite on a still evening is another documented concentration point.

Practical advice for Portree: use the waterfront for evening meals and harbour-side plans.

Any inland route — a walk to the Old Man of Storr, the Fairy Glen, or the Braes — needs pre-timing.

The difference between a breezy coastal forecast and the conditions in a sheltered birch glen a quarter-mile inland is the most significant microclimatic gap on Skye.

The Trotternish ridge itself is windy and reliable as long as you stay above 200 metres, but the descent into any eastern corrie or sheltered glen drops you back into still, damp air.

The campsites on the eastern side of the island — Staffin, Lealt, the Braes — are the places where visitors most consistently report being caught out: beautiful coastal views that draw campers to pitch at the water's edge, and a still evening that delivers the full Skye midge experience.

If you are driving through Skye, the most practical rule is to check the forecast for the specific glen, not for the island: the difference between the breezy west coast around Dunvegan and the sheltered east coast glens is the most important planning factor on Skye.
